Shawarma is thinly sliced cuts of marinated meat, like beef and lamb, although chicken or turkey could be used, rolled into a large piece of pita or flatbread that has been heated or steamed. While gyros are served with tomatoes, onion, lettuce and tzatziki sauce. Pitas for shawarma can contain hummus, pickles, tahini, pickled fruits, assorted veggies, even fried potatoes.
